A.L.G. Estates a citrus producer in the Western Cape, South Africa, known for its innovation and enterprising spirit developed the first citrus pruner in the country now widely used and exported to numerous countries. The estate controls its whole citrus production chain from the orchard to the retail outlet. During 2010 the estate harvested 15,800 tons of 26 different citrus varieties from its 6 farms. The fruit is processed and packed in its own pack house while a considerable proportion is labeled for selected clients. Small and reject fruit is processed by their juicing plant which supplies fresh orange juice to the trade as well as oil extracts from the peels to the pharmaceutical industry. The redundant peels are finally used as fodder for their sheep and cattle operation. The estate also runs its own marketing and export logistics company. Most of their produce are sold in supermarket chains such as Walmart, Costco, Wegmans and WholeFoods in the USA; Marks & Spencer and ASDA in the UK; Carrefour and Jumbo in the EU; and Woolworths and Shoprite Checkers in South Africa. Its produce also reaches a number of African countries, Russia and the Middle East. The Estate is South Africa's biggest private exporter of citrus to the USA and the biggest single citrus supplier to Woolworths SA.
